The cold weather is here, the cool and dry air is whispering ‘it’s cold’. Our clothing and diet have changed in this weather and at the same time, our skin also needs extra attention and care. We all desire to have dewy skin in this weather but it’s not easy because the effect of dry and icy temps, whipping winds outside and all kinds of indoor heat make it drier and parched. Our skin’s skin barrier cracks and making it less able to repair itself. Coming days will be even more difficult for our skin. The temperature change disrupts the hydrolipid film of the skin and favours the transepidermal water loss. It is therefore important to pay attention to a good moisture and lipid balance. Lipid-containing creams with innovative active ingredients to support the skin’s protective barrier and in this way regulate the lipid and moisture balance.
In spite of taking additional moisture, we need to do something more to keep our skin smooth and dewy not only our facial skin but also our body. I have started my skincare regime with some skincare products which are according to my skin’s nature and added some habits in my lifestyle which keep my skin healthy and soft these days.
Choose a good cleanser
At first, you should change your skin cleanser and choose such cleanser that is more hydrating and contains. I’m using The Body Shop Drops of Youth Gentle Foaming Wash these days and I’m pleased with the outcome. This cleanser is from Drops of Youth which is one my favourite range from The Body Shop so I never doubt its effectiveness. Though I was not a fan of foaming face wash this one is wonderful and surprised me with its gentle texture and I could feel the results straight away. After using this product my skin feels soft, smooth and moisturised. It is amazing for sensitive skin. I use this product twice a day morning and evening and apply to a damp face, then wash off after use.
The best aspect of this product that it cleanses my skin perfectly in a very gentle way. I really enjoy while applying the lather on my face. I apply this by gently massaging my skin and then wash it with lukewarm water. It never makes my skin dry like other cleansers. I never leave my skin naked and apply a hydrating toner and then moisturiser to seal in moisture. I also use a cleansing balm when I feel my skin much dry and it works well at such times.
Use lukewarm water
Nothing is pleasant than a hot shower and bath in the winter but for the face and hands, I try to use lukewarm water. Using hot water on your face and hands is not good, hot water can gradually steal our skin’s natural oil and make it rough and drier.
Never leave your skin naked
As I said before, I apply moisturizer just after washing my face. It’s a habit not only in winter but in all the season and it really works great. Actually, our skin requires moisture just after our wash when skin is damp. When it’s damp, the moisture gets absorbed into the skin perfectly. I keep my moisturiser near the shower stall or basin.
We often ignore exfoliating our skin in winter but it’s very necessary to exfoliate our face and body’s skin well. When the dead cell is altogether the moisture can’t get in. Use a good face and body scrub to exfoliate your skin. After that moisturise it well.
Nourish your skin
This is the most important thing you should do in this season. I change my skincare products right before winter’s arrival especially my cleanser and moisturizer. I always try to choose a smart formula which has natural, hydrating and with nourishing ingredients. I go for an oil-based cream for me which gives extra hydration to my skin in this season. Currently using Biotique BXL Cellular Whitening Cream and Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Ageing Revitalizing Night Skin Cream which is doing well on my skin.
Drink enough water
We often do this mistake, our body needs hydration from the inside. When we drink less water our skin becomes drier so despite hot chocolate, coffee and tea you drink enough water. I drink one large cup of warm water with lemon every morning and it keeps not only refreshed my skin for the entire day but also hydrates it from inside.
Protect your skin
Winter sun can be just as damaging as summer sun, so apply a safe option like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to any exposed areas. I love sitting in the lovely bright sunlight in my lawn but always make sure that I apply sun-protecting lotion before sitting there. Also, cover my head with a scarf and shawl when the sunlight comes directly on my face.
Feed your skin by applying face masks
Like our diet, our skin needs food which could provide it extra nourishment. Face masks are the solution but make sure the face mask you are using should be according to your skin’s texture. Use natural moisturizing ingredients like honey, avocado, yoghurt, olive and jojoba oils, almond oil, bananas, and aloe. If you have dry skin like me, a honey-based face mask will be wonderful for this season.
I’m using The Body Shop Ethiopian Honey Deep Nourishing Mask and I completely love how it is working on my skin. After just the first use, this mask left my skin feeling amazingly smooth and baby soft. It is definitely replenishing, comforting and moisturising. It prevents dryness and helps to improve the elasticity of the skin. I apply this mask once a week and keep it for 20 minutes on my skin and then wash off. The best part of this mask that it has no parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil. You can also use homemade face masks for your skin.
Don’t avoid your body
I often see some women do efforts to keep their face skin nourished but keep avoiding the rest of their body. Remember if your body skin is rough, dry and stretchy, you never look and feel healthy.
Oiling is the best option in winter at least once a week before bathing. Use a good shower gel which has natural moisturising ingredients that cleanses your skin without making it dry. I’m using The Body Shop Moringa Shower Gel these days and it works great! It consists pure mogra (Moringa) extracts which so pleasant. I use it with a soft loofah which is also from the same brand and is extremely soft and smooth. It makes the shower gel’s job even better gives a pleasing feel while taking shower every time. It doesn’t make my skin dry which I love.
After taking shower I lock the moisture by applying The Body Shop’s Moringa Body Yogurt which is extremely luxurious and hydrating formula. The gel-cream formula is perfect, it’s light as air, cooling, fast-absorbing, and infused with dreamy scents. It melts right into the skin without much rubbing, and a little goes a long way. The gel-cream is completely weightless and the result is beautifully silky. It nourishes my skin perfectly well. I really love how it gives a velvety effect to my skin without making it greasy. My skin feels soft and supple just after the application. It’s so light in texture like a feather and gets absorbed into the skin effortlessly. I apply it all over my body on my damp skin after bathing in the morning and it makes me free throughout the day. These things have made my skin well nourished and smooth these days.
In my city the weather becomes extremely cold in December and January, we can’t live without heaters and blowers but the side effect of these systems is that they dry out the air and make our skin drier. A humidifier can solve this problem to some extent. I’m considering to install one in my bedroom this year.
I never forget to moisturise my hands, feet and knees at night because these areas of the body have thin skin and need extra moisture. Overnight moisture provides deep nourishment to these parts. I use the TBS yogurt and some times a body butter, it takes hardly 5 minutes. I wear cotton gloves and socks to lock the moisture till the morning.
It is very important to take care of your diet in this season. Try a lot of fruits and green veggies, like tomato, cucumbers, carrots, spinach and all seasonal vegetables. In fruits take oranges, apples, kiwi, avocados etc. If you are non-vegetarian, eat eggs, chicken regularly. Consume dry fruits daily. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C and zinc to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin. These things keep your skin supple and soft from the inside.
So these are some tips which I’m using these days, I mention once again that my skin is dry but honestly speaking, I’m really pleased with my skin’s condition these days. I would love to know about your skincare routine this winter.
